What was the first constitution of the United States called? - the Articles of Confederation


How would you describe the Critical Period? When was it? - this was an era from 1781 to 1789 when the US was struggling in many ways, mostly due the fact that the Articles of Confederation was a weak governing document. The states were not unified and we were deep in debt as a country.


Who was the president of the Constitutional Convention? - George Washington


Who were the famous Federalists? Anti-Federalists? - Federalists = Hamilton, Madison, Washington, Franklin, and John Jay; Anti-Feds = Jefferson, George Mason, Sam Adams, Patrick Henry


What does “democracy” mean? - a government where the people rule


Who was the “Father of the Constitution”? - James Madison


How many Articles are in the Constitution? - 7


What are the six things that the Founders believed our government was built to do? - form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to future generations

What is an amendment? - a change or addition to the Constitution


What are the first ten amendments of the US Constitution and what do they mean? - The Bill of Rights protects citizens from an overly powerful federal government. the freedoms in the Bill of Rights range from freedom of religion, speech, and press, to the right a lawyer and a speedy trial.


What did the 13th and 15th amendments do? - 13th amendment abolished slavery; 15th amendment gave blacks the right to vote

Study Guide - The American Revolution 9/29/15

What happened at the Boston Massacre? - a group of colonists confronted multiple British soldiers in March 1775. Shots were fired and five Americans were killed. The Sons of Liberty used the incident to motivate people to further distrust the British authorities.


What happened at Lexington and Concord? - On April 19, 1775, colonists (minutemen) met hundreds of British soldiers in Lexington, and 8 Americans were killed. ("The Shot Heard 'Round the World") - Later than morning, those same British soldiers met more minutemen at Concord, and were forced to retreat back to Boston because of the strength of the colonial resistance


What was a Loyalist? - a colonist who wanted to remain British


What was the Continental Army? - this was the name of the official American army, led by General Washington


What was the Declaration of Independence? What are its most famous lines? Who wrote it? - the Dec of Indep is the official statement by the Second Continental Congress which declared to the world that the 13 colonies were now independent states, no longer ruled by England. It was written by Thomas Jefferson and edited by the Congress. Its most famous lines are in the 2nd section, which declare that "all men are created equal," and have rights given by the "Creator". Further, it declares that governments exist to protect the natural rights of the people.


What was the last major battle of the Revolutionary War? - The Battle (siege) of Yorktown
